4. If you are using Ethernet for the network interface, MacIPX requires that the AppleTalk Phase 2 software be installed on your Macintosh system. However, you can continue to operate in AppleTalk Phase 1 mode even after the AppleTalk Phase 2 software has been installed.
NetWare Server or Router Requirements When Using the IPX Gateway
1. NetWare 3.11 or later, or NetWare Multi-Protocol Router 2.0 or later.
Note: You need the IPX Gateway software *only* under specific circumstances; that is, you are using a MacIPX-based application on network segments that use only the AppleTalk transport protocol to connect Macintosh workstations to the network. Such "AppleTalk-only" segments result from technological or administrative conditions like these: the segment may use LocalTalk or another cable served by a third-party AppleTalk router, the segment may be used for AppleTalk Remote Access (ARA), or a network administrator may want to designate a segment for AppleTalk traffic only.
If you use Ethernet or Token Ring segments to connect your Macintosh workstations to an IPX network and if you permit IPX traffic on those segments, then you do *not* need the IPX Gateway software.
The ReadMeFirst file on the MacIPX Software Developer's Kit diskette lists a variety of locations where the IPX Gateway software has been posted.
Installation and Configuration
Note: You will find more detailed information about installation and configuration in the MacIPX Programmer's Guide (Novell Part #100-001590-003).
1. Install the MacIPX file in the System Folder on Macintosh workstations running System 6.x or in the Control Panels folder on Macintosh workstations running System 7.x.
2. Install one or more of the MacIPX Ethernet, MacIPX AppleTalk, and MacIPX Token Ring files in the System Folder on Macintosh workstations running System 6.x or in the Extensions folder on Macintosh workstations running System 7.x.
3. Optionally install IPXNetStat as a Desk Accessory on Macintosh workstations running System 6.x or in the Apple Menu Items folder on Macintosh workstations running System 7.x.
4. Use the MacIPX Control Panel to select the network interface that MacIPX will use.
Fixed Anomalies and Other Changes
The following changes have been made since the previous MacIPX release (version 1.0.3):
1. The Control Panel's file name has been changed from "MacIPX™" to "MacIPX" to avoid localization problems.
2. MacIPX's network interfaces (or LAPs) have been unbundled from the MacIPX Control Panel file. The network interfaces now reside in separate files that must be installed in the System folder on Macintosh workstations running System 6.x or in the Extensions folder on Macintosh workstations running System 7.x.
3. MacIPX now displays the message "An IPX gateway could not be found" rather than "An AppleTalk gateway could not be found" when an IPX gateway cannot be found.
4. MacIPX now works with Asanté Token Ring boards, provided you use a version 4.0 or later Asanté Token Ring driver.
5. MacIPX no longer changes the "Always Auto-Configure Frame Type" checkbox for Ethernet and Token Ring when you bring up the Ethernet and Token Ring configuration dialogs by double clicking on the appropriate icon.
Known Anomalies and Limitations
1. AppleTalk must be active (that is, the "AppleTalk Active" radio button in the Chooser must be selected) for MacIPX to function properly.
2. Information about the MacIPX configuration is stored in the MacIPX Control Panel file itself, and in the network interface (or LAP) files. Because of this, any changes to the MacIPX configuration will be lost if MacIPX is re-installed for any reason.
